What is Junihitoe?
The twelve-layered kimono is a formal dress for ladies-in-waiting that was perfected in the mid-Heian period. The twelve-layered kimono is the most representative formal dress for adult women.
It was worn as formal attire in public places such as the Imperial Court.
It was only worn on certain occasions, such as at court ceremonies, and was worn by the ladies-in-waiting of nobles on special occasions.
