Some shops in Yufuin do not accept credit cards or electronic money. Preparing cash in advance is key to enjoying street food and shopping. We'll also provide information on what to do if you need to exchange currency after arriving.
Why You Need Cash in Yufuin
Yufuin, a popular hot spring resort, is a fantastic destination where you can enjoy the Japanese countryside, rural townscape, street food, and hot springs. However, there is one important thing to keep in mind before you go: "Make sure you have Japanese yen in cash ready before heading to Yufuin."
Unlike major metropolitan areas such as Fukuoka and Tokyo, some independent shops, street food stalls, and day-trip hot springs may not accept credit cards or electronic money. If you don't have cash, you might have to give up on enjoying the food or shopping you were looking forward to.

Rule #1: Get Your Cash in Big Cities Before Heading to Yufuin
If you try to exchange money after arriving in Yufuin, you might find that banks are closed or ATMs are unavailable. It's best to prepare Japanese yen in advance while you're in a city before traveling to Yufuin.
For Visitors Traveling from Fukuoka (Hakata / Tenjin / Fukuoka Airport)

Tips for a Smooth Trip
Prepare some change and 1,000 yen bills: Coin lockers often only accept 100 yen coins and 1,000 yen bills, so it's a good idea to have plenty of change and 1,000 yen bills on hand. Also, there is a change machine at Yufuin Station that can exchange 1,000 yen bills for 100 yen coins, so please make use of that as well.

If you need to store your luggage while sightseeing, please stop by "Yufuin Chikki". It's a staffed counter, so you can store large luggage that won't fit in coin lockers, and you can also pay with 10,000 yen or 5,000 yen bills. Coin lockers are also available.
Make sure you have plenty of Japanese yen ready beforehand so you can enjoy a stress-free and comfortable trip to Yufuin!
