Every year in mid-October, downtown Toyota is enveloped in the spirit of the Koromo Festival — a long-standing festival held since the early 1600s. Using sheer human strength, men wearing traditional Japanese festival garb pull large floats towering nearly six meters into the air through the streets as paper confetti showers down upon them, creating a truly dream-like atmosphere.
With large wooden wheels only able to move forward and backward, the men shout in unison as they use all of their strength to push the nearly five-ton floats in the desired direction. These scenes of teamwork by festival members joining together from their respective areas of central Toyota among the fluttering confetti and traditional Japanese music are awe-inspiring.
For the visitor to Toyota, the annual Koromo Matsuri festival is a delightful and fascinating side of Toyota, and a chance to experience a real Japanese festival. So, mark your calendars because the excitement is coming soon!
