The origin of the temple is said to be that Emperor Shomu ordered the monk Gyoki to build it during the Nara period, but the Joruriji Temple record ``Joruriji School Articles'' states that it was built by Eishoji. It is said that in 1047, Yoshiaki, a monk from Toma, enshrined Yakushi Nyorai and opened the temple.

The garden, which represents the Pure Land of Paradise, has been designated as a special scenic spot by the country, and still retains its Heian-period form, centered on the treasure pond, with the main hall and nine Amida Buddhas enshrined to the west, and the three-storied pagoda and Yakushi Nyorai to the east.
