During the era when Okinawa was the Ryukyu Kingdom, Ryukyu Dance (Ryukyu Buyou) was developed and performed to welcome Chinese envoys. This traditional performing art represents Okinawan culture and continues to be loved by a large audience. Today it is broadly divided into two categories: Classical Dance (Koten Buyou) and Ordinary Dance (Zou Odori).Classical Dance: This is a formal dance originally performed at the imperial court during the period of the Ryukyu kings. It has a solemn atmosphere and a sense of elegance and dignity.Ordinary Dance: These dances are based on the daily life of ordinary people. They are characterized by friendly and dynamic expressions.
The appeal of Ryukyu Dance lies in its diverse expressiveness. The combination of graceful hand and body movements, demonstrative expressions, and vibrant costumes captivate the audience. Ryukyu Dance was designated as in Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan in 2009.
