The "pond below the mountain" was once called "Oita" in the Oita dialect. It is said that in 1884, the Meiji era Confucian scholar Mori Kuso named it "Kinrin Lake" (Golden Scale Lake) after seeing the fish scales in the lake shining golden in the light of the setting sun. True to its name, the water's surface changes appearance depending on the time of day, and continues to fascinate visitors to this day.

A winter tradition: the miracle of morning mist

The greatest feature of Lake Kinrin is that both pure water and hot springs bubble up from the bottom of the lake.
