A Real-Life Adventure: Passing Through the Hand-Dug Tunnel
Leaving the idyllic rural landscape and descending a lush, green staircase, a low tunnel carved directly into the rock suddenly appears. The entrance is like a tiny cave, so narrow that adults have to crouch down to get through. The excitement of stepping through it is like being the star of a movie!
Feel the Power: Your Private Twin Waterfall Escape
The moment you emerge from the dark tunnel, you're greeted by a torrent of spray and a powerful roar of water. Ryusho Waterfall is a spectacular spot where two waterfalls, the "Male Falls" and the "Female Falls," cascade down side-by-side into the pool below. You can get very close to the falls, allowing you to experience the cooling mist and the powerful energy of nature with your whole body.
Rental car access guide from Yufuin
1. Take Route 210 towards Shonai / Oita City
From the center of Yufuin, head southeast along National Route 210 towards Oita City for about 20 kilometers. You'll be there shortly after passing the Shonai Kagura (Sacred Dance) statue at Yufu City Hall.
2. Look for the Convenience Store
When you see the convenience store, "Lawson Shonai Town Store" along National Route 210, turn left at that intersection.
3. Follow the signs to the private property
After driving about 200 meters along a gentle curve, you will see a small sign on the side of the road that says "龍昇の滝 Ryusho Waterfall." (There is a small bus stop across the street.) Please slowly pull into the parking lot of the private house on the left.
4. About Parking
Parking is available on private residential property. Please place the parking fee into the unmanned honor box. No change is provided, so please bring exact coins! (200 yen per vehicle / as of July 2026)
Directions for walking from the parking lot to the waterfall (approximately 5-10 minutes on foot)
1. After parking your car, walk past the house toward the back. Enjoy the view of the rice fields stretching out in front of you, and follow the narrow path behind the house to the left.
2. After walking for a while, you will see a sign; turn right. You will then descend a narrow staircase and slope with a handrail for a while. The path is unpaved, so please watch your step to avoid slipping.
3. When you arrive at the low, hand-dug tunnel, you will need to crouch down to pass through. The ceiling inside the tunnel is very low. It is a short distance, but be careful not to hit your head as you pass through.
4. Once you exit the tunnel, Ryusho Waterfall will be right in front of you!
Visitor Tips & Things to Know
Respect Private Property & Visitor Etiquette:
The area from the parking lot to the waterfall is entirely private property. Visiting is permitted thanks to the kindness of the local residents. Please enjoy your stroll quietly while observing proper etiquette, such as taking your trash with you and not trespassing on private homes or rice fields.
Wear comfortable walking shoes:
The slopes and stairs leading to the waterfall are unpaved and can become slippery after rain. Please avoid high heels and sandals and wear comfortable sneakers.
Share the View and Take Turns for Photos:
The area around the waterfall after exiting the tunnel is narrow, so please be considerate of other tourists and share the space when taking photos. Also, eating and drinking are strictly prohibited.
No Restrooms Available On-Site:
There are no restrooms on the premises, including in the parking lot. We recommend using the facilities at restaurants or rest stops along the road beforehand.
