The first part features the Noh play "Shunkan," performed by the head of the Hosho school, Kazuhide Hosho. A general amnesty is granted in prayer for the safe delivery of Empress Tokuko, the consort of Emperor Takakura, and those exiled to Kikaijima Island for their plot to overthrow the Taira clan are also pardoned, and an envoy of pardons heads to the island. The envoy arrives at the island to see the monk Shunkan, the young general of Tamba, Naritsune, and the judge Taira no Yasuyori, and presents them with the pardon certificates, but Shunkan's name is not on them, and the envoy reveals that he was instructed to remain on the island. They cling to the mooring rope of the boat that is setting sail with them on board, but to no avail, and Shunkan disappears, leaving behind his lament. Wearing a special mask for "Shunkan" makes it a truly unique and distinctive role.
The second act is the Noh play "Nomori Hakuto" by Takashi Takeda. A mountain ascetic from Haguro Mountain in Hane Province meets an old man who is a field guardian in Kasugano, Yamato Province, and learns about the Nomori Mirror Pond in the area, how its name comes from a mirror held by a demon god who protects the fields, and how the mirror helped the emperor find his falcon during a falconry hunt. The mountain ascetic waits and prays in front of the mound, and late at night the demon god of the field guardian appears, shows the mountain ascetic a reflection of everything from heaven to the bottom of hell in the mirror, gives it to the ascetic, and then disappears back into hell. The Kyogen plays are "Roren" and "Ka-sumo" by the Nagareyama Tojiro family of the Okura school. Each act begins with an explanation of the plays to be performed.
