[2026] NARA TO-KAE: Experience the Most Enchanting Summer Night in the Ancient Capital

The Nara To-kae Lantern Festival is a beloved summer tradition in the ancient capital of Nara. Every August, the entire Nara area is enveloped in candlelight, creating a magical and enchanting scene. This event, which began in 1999, has now become a quintessential summer festival in Nara, captivating many people.

From August 5th to 14th, approximately 20,000 candles will light up the Nara area for 10 days. World Heritage sites and historical landmarks such as Todai-ji Temple, Kofuku-ji Temple, Kasuga Shrine, and Ukimido Pavilion will be enveloped in soft light, revealing a completely different and fantastical appearance compared to the daytime.

The true charm of Nara Toukae lies in its 'peaceful tranquility'. Unlike lively fireworks festivals, Unlike the splendor of a fireworks display, the sounds you'll hear are the chirping of insects, leaves rustling in the breeze, the occasional gentle call of Nara's beloved deer, and the soft flicker of candle flames. It's a rare opportunity to slow down and enjoy a quiet summer evening unique to the ancient capital.

The word "Toka" refers to the phenomenon where a candle wick appears to bloom like a flower, and it has long been considered auspicious. As the name suggests, the Nara To-kae Festival embodies the wish for "a light that illuminates people's hearts," and each candle is carefully lit by many volunteers.

Each venue offers its own unique scenery. The candlelit reflections on the pond at Ukimido Pavilion, the enchanting atmosphere around Kagami-ike Pond, and the softly illuminated approach leading to Kasuga Taisha Shrine each create unforgettable moments. Around sunset, you may even spot Nara's famous deer quietly standing beside the glowing candles—a quintessential summer scene found only in Nara.

The most convenient way to reach the venue is to take a Nara Kotsu Bus from Kintetsu Nara Station and get off at "Himuro-jinja, Kokuritsu-hakubutsukan" bus stop.
