This is a way to enjoy the evening in winter at Gero Onsen in Gifu Prefecture . Gero Onsen is one of Japan's "Three Great Hot Springs," along with Arima Onsen and Kusatsu Onsen. Although it can be reached from Nagoya by express train without changing trains, many people pass it by on their way to Takayama or Shirakawa .

What will the winter fireworks at Gero Onsen in 2026 be like?
The winter fireworks in Gero Onsen are officially called the "Gero Onsen Fireworks Musical Winter Performance." Fireworks are launched from the banks of the Hida River River, which flows through the heart of the hot spring town, in time with the music.
In 2026, there will be three regular performances on Saturdays in December, and a special Christmas performance on Thursday, December 24th. Regular performances are approximately 15 minutes long. The special performance will be extended to approximately 30 minutes and will include events other than fireworks.
The venue is about a 3-minute walk from JR Gero Station. It's also within walking distance of the inns in the hot spring town, so you can easily enjoy it even if you're traveling independently without a car.

What makes December 24th special?
The Christmas special performance on December 24th will be a special night featuring fireworks and events typical of a Japanese hot spring resort. Planning your trip to coincide with this date is highly recommended.
- Approximately 30 minutes of fireworks : Fireworks will light up the winter night sky for about twice the usual duration. - Candle illumination in Gero Onsen : Candlelight, symbolizing wishes for world peace, will gently illuminate the hot spring town. - Geisha and maiko dance : Geisha and maiko from Gero Onsen will perform dances. - Gifts from Santa : Santa will appear at Gero Station and Shirasagi Green Park and will distribute local sweets and other gifts in limited quantities.

I recommend a 1-night, 2-day stay at a traditional Japanese inn.
The winter fireworks end between 8:15 and 8:30 PM. If you are heading back to Nagoya the same day, it will be a hectic night spent worrying about catching your train. If you stay at Gero Onsen, you can warm up in the hot springs after the fireworks and then go straight to bed. The advantage of a 1-night, 2-day stay is that you can enjoy a full range of experiences typical of a Japanese hot spring inn: dinner, fireworks, hot springs, and a morning bath.
Day 1
1. Around 11:00 AM, take the Limited Express Hida train from Nagoya Station to Gero.
2. Arrived at Gero Station around 13:00. Left luggage at the inn and traveled light.
3. Around 1:30 PM: Lunch and a stroll in the hot spring town. Enjoy Hida beef, local cuisine "Keichan" (chicken dish), and street food sweets.
4. Around 3:00 PM, take a walk through the hot spring town, visiting the free footbaths along the way.
5. Around 3:30 PM, we checked into the inn. We changed into yukata (traditional Japanese robes) and took a bath before dinner.
6. Around 18:00: Dinner at the inn (at an early time to make it in time for the fireworks)
7. Around 19:45, put on a jacket and head to the banks of the Hida River.
8. 20:00 Watch winter fireworks.
9. After the fireworks, return to the inn and warm your chilled body in the hot springs.
Day 2
1. Around 7:00 AM, a morning bath. Soaking in the hot springs while gazing at the mountains in the morning is truly special.
2. Breakfast at the inn around 8:00 AM
3. Around 10:00 AM, check out and head to Gero-Onsen Gassho-mura(approximately 6 minutes by bus from Gero Station, or 20 minutes on foot).
4. Lunch in the hot spring town around 12:00.
5. In the afternoon, take the Limited Express Hida back to Nagoya, or head in the opposite direction towards Takayama.
Train times change with the seasons and schedule revisions, so please check the latest JR Tokai timetable before departure. If you also plan to visit Takayama, a 2-night, 3-day trip from Nagoya to Takayama, then to Gero, and back to Nagoya is also recommended.

Pay attention to the dinner time at the inn.
The winter fireworks begin at 8 PM. In Japanese hot spring inns, it's common to decide the start time for dinner when making a reservation or checking in, and the kaiseki meal is enjoyed slowly over about an hour and a half.
If you plan to watch the fireworks, choose an early dinner time, such as around 6 PM, so you can head to the venue comfortably after your meal. It's a good idea to mention that you want to see the fireworks when making your reservation and confirm the dinner time with the inn.
Also, Gero Onsen doesn't have many restaurants that stay open late into the night. If you're planning to eat out on a room-only basis, you might have trouble finding a place to eat before or after the fireworks. Choosing a plan that includes dinner and breakfast, where you can enjoy dishes made with Hida beef, river fish, and local vegetables, will allow you to enjoy the fireworks and hot springs without worrying about meals.

Enjoying Japanese hot spring inns
The hot springs of Gero Onsen are a smooth-feeling alkaline simple hot spring, also known as the "beauty spring." In traditional Japanese inns, guests change into yukata (light cotton kimono) provided in their rooms and wear them while staying in the inn and at dinner.
Before dinner, after the fireworks, and in the morning—being able to soak in the hot springs multiple times at different times is a pleasure only guests can enjoy. The warmth of the hot springs feels all the more comforting because of the cold winter weather outside.
What to wear to Gero Onsen in December
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency's average data for Hagiwara , Gero City, the average high temperature in December is about 8°C, and the average low temperature is about -0.4°C. This is much colder than winter in Taipei, and temperatures can drop close to freezing around 8 PM when the fireworks are being watched. Since you will be standing outdoors to watch, please dress warmly.
・Coat : A thick coat such as a down coat. Even if you plan to wear it over the yukata provided at the inn, it's best to wear your own coat when going out. ・Warm accessories : Gloves, scarf, hat, disposable hand warmers ・Footwear : It gets cold by the river, so wear thick socks and non-slip shoes.
Snowfall varies from year to year and even from day to day. If you're looking forward to enjoying a snowy landscape, be sure to check the weather forecast before you depart.
The next day we went to Gero-Onsen Gassho-mura.
The morning after enjoying the fireworks, head to Gero-Onsen Gassho-mura. This open-air museum features 10 Gassho-zukuri style houses relocated from places like Shirakawa-go, where you can see the "Former Oto Family Residence," a nationally designated Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property.
Shirakawa-go, a World Heritage site, is a village where people still live. On the other hand, Gero-Onsen Gassho-mura is a museum that houses Gassho-zukuri style buildings, and its unique feature is that you can take your time to look inside the buildings and experience life in the past. It is close to the hot spring town, so you can easily stop by after checking out of your accommodation.
• Hours: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM
• Admission: 800 yen for adults, 400 yen for elementary and junior high school students
• Closed: Open all year round (some facilities may close temporarily)

Enjoy Gero Onsen in winter by staying overnight.
Gero Onsen is a hot spring resort that's too good to just pass through on your way to Takayama or Shirakawa. Enjoy dinner at your inn, watch the winter fireworks, and warm yourself in the hot springs before going to sleep. The next morning, enjoy a morning bath and visit the Gassho Village.
How about spending a night in Gero Onsen in December 2026 and enjoying a relaxing winter night in Japan?
