Did you know that Shizuoka City has traditional crafts that have been passed down from the Imagawa clan to the present day? We will introduce you to the traditional crafts of Suruga that are closely linked to our daily lives.
It is known that lacquerware such as bowls have been made since the time when Shizuoka was called Sunpu, and it developed as an industry during the Edo period, which was established by Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Starting with Suruga lacquerware, other traditional crafts such as Suruga makie and Suruga lacquer geta emerged one after another, and products such as bowls and stacked boxes were exported in large quantities as export lacquerware at the end of the Edo period. Shizuoka also has techniques such as Suruga bamboo crafts, Suruga Hina dolls and Zenki ware, which were passed down by craftsmen from all over the country when they built Sunpu Castle and Kunozan Toshogu Shrine.
Maruko, Suruga Ward, Shizuoka City, is home to one of the largest facilities in Japan where you can experience making such traditional crafts.
